Course Summary

Delivered by Dympna Pearson and Clare Grace [authors of Weight Management A practitioners Guide], this course delivers a succinct update on current evidence, and the challenges of its practical application. It is conveniently delivered in one day and will include important take home messages that can be applied to everyday practice. Programme highlights include what and how to assess, evidenced based dietary treatments, reflecting on attitudes and stigma, community support for the bariatric patient and measuring service outcomes.

An essential weight management update for practitioners working in tier 2 and 3 providing an overview of the latest evidence and its practical application.


Introduction

Dietary modification is central to weight management and remains important when drug therapy or surgical treatment are deemed appropriate. Given that dietitians play such a pivotal role in the design and delivery of weight management services it is important we are confident in our knowledge of the latest evidence and it’s practical application. This day will conveniently summarise the latest research while providing an opportunity to reflect on practice, share expertise and consider how common challenges may be overcome.

The course provides a solid foundation for further training in weight management.

Teaching Methods

Learning activities: These will include lectures, interactive discussions, video demonstrations, case studies and role play.

Prior to the study day participants will be invited to anonymously complete an online knowledge quiz tailored to assess areas of knowledge related to the learning outcomes. This will be repeated following completion of the training, to help assess the effectiveness of the teaching.

Course Aim

To update participant’s knowledge, understanding and confidence in the management of obesity in the tier 2 & 3 settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Outline how negative attitudes towards obese people can impact on care.
  • Identify the key elements of assessment and how these are linked to measurable outcomes.
  • Summarise the latest evidence based dietary, physical activity and pharmacological treatments, the outcomes they are likely to achieve, and the clinical scenarios where they may be most suitable.
  • Explain how behavior change skills and motivational approaches can be integrated into the consultation.
  • Define approaches which support weight maintenance.
  • Explain the key elements of dietetic care for the bariatric patient with a particular focus on the care of the bariatric patient in the community.

Prerequisites

Professionals working in Tier 2 and 3 services to include: doctors, nurses, dietitians, psychologists, physiotherapists, exercise specialist and non-clinical practitioners.
